The Pre-Release Mastering Checklist: Beyond LUFS Targets
Delivering the right master is not about hitting a magic number. It is about ensuring a quality listening experience in the most important context: the playlist.
Your release strategy culminates in a single action: uploading your master to a distributor. The choices you make in the weeks prior determine whether that asset is set up for success or failure. The obsession with platform-specific LUFS targets is a widespread misunderstanding. Your goal is not to create a dozen different masters, but one great one.
Streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and others all use loudness normalization. They turn down loud tracks and turn up quiet ones. Your job is not to game this system, but to deliver a master that sounds excellent after they have adjusted it. This means prioritizing dynamic range over raw volume.
A track mastered to -14 LUFS integrated with a true peak at -1.0 dBTP is a widely accepted, safe standard. However, these are guidelines, not laws.
