The Unskippable Sequence of Song Registration
To collect all the money you are owed, you must register your work in the right order. PRO, then Publishing Administrator. This is the central nervous system of your music business.
Your career as a professional creator hinges on a sequence. It is not dramatic, nor is it glamorous. It is, however, the absolute foundation of your ability to get paid for your work. The correct order of song registration is non-negotiable.
Every song generates two distinct copyrights: the master (the specific sound recording) and the composition (the underlying melody, lyrics, and structure). We are concerned here with the composition, the asset you created during the Songwriting & Craft phase.
The sequence is direct and logical. First, you must affiliate with a Performing Rights Organization (PRO) like ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC. This is your entry point into the system. Your PRO is responsible for collecting performance royalties—money earned when your song is played on radio, on television, or in a public venue.
Once you are a member, you register your song's composition and its writer splits directly with your PRO. This action attaches your name to the work and tells the global music ecosystem who to pay for public performances.
The critical next step is engaging a Publishing Administrator. A PRO does not collect mechanical royalties, which are generated every time your song is streamed, downloaded, or reproduced on vinyl. A pub admin does. They also collect your performance royalties from territories your local PRO cannot reach. They cannot perform this function if your song is not first registered with a PRO.
This is the order that matters: PRO affiliation, then PRO registration, then Publishing Administration. Reversing or skipping steps results in uncollected royalties. It is the most common and costly mistake an independent artist can make.
This administrative protocol might feel distant from the creative spark, but it is the very system that honors a song's Emotional Resonance.
