The Fan Funnel Has Only Four Steps — Turning a single listener into a fan
Stranger, listener, follower, supporter. Most independent artists try to skip steps and wonder why nothing converts.
Growth feels chaotic because most artists treat every fan the same. There are only four states, and each one needs a different action from you.
Stranger: hasn't heard you. Your only job is to show up where they already are. Short video, playlist placement, sync, a feature. The metric is reach.
Listener: has heard one song. Your job is to make the next song obvious. A clean profile, a hero song pinned, no friction to playing more. The metric is per-listener stream depth.
Follower: has clicked follow. Your job is to convert them into a relationship. Direct messages, email, story replies, a place to talk that you own. The metric is response rate.
Supporter: has paid you money, time, or attention beyond a stream. Your job is to make supporting feel like belonging. Names you know, perks that feel personal, invitations not announcements. The metric is repeat support.
When growth stalls, diagnose by funnel stage. Strangers? You're not showing up in new places. Listeners not following? Your profile is leaking. Followers not converting? You don't own the relationship anywhere they can be reached.
Pick the weakest stage. Spend the week there. Move on.
