The Three-Year Song Sketchbook
Simulate a long-term development process by nurturing one song idea for a full week.
This challenge compresses a long-term development cycle into seven days. You will take a single, simple song idea and intentionally develop it through structured iteration, focusing on depth and resonance over speed.
The plan, day by day
- Day 1Identify a single, core song concept (a title, a lyrical hook, or a chord progression). Use an AI tool to generate 10 lyrical or thematic variations to broaden your perspective.
- Day 2Write a single, raw verse and chorus based on the strongest variation. Do not edit. Record a simple voice memo.
- Day 3Leave the song alone. Do not listen to it or work on it. Instead, create a mood board or playlist that captures the song's intended feeling.
- Day 4Revisit the voice memo. Rewrite the verse and chorus with the mood board as your guide. Focus on sharpening the emotional impact of each line.
- Day 5Play the revised version for a trusted peer. Ask them one question: 'How does this make you feel?' Do not ask if they 'like it.' Note their emotional feedback.
- Day 6Perform a final revision based on the emotional feedback. Solidify the structure and key lyrical moments.
- Day 7Record a polished demo. Compare it to Day 2's voice memo. Document three key improvements that resulted from the patient process.
