The Quarter-Year Songcraft Sprint
Dedicate seven days to deep work on a single song, building one piece of a long-term catalog.
This challenge shifts the focus from speed to depth. Over seven days, you will take a single song from a core emotional concept to a refined demo, embedding quality and intention at every step.
The plan, day by day
- 1Concept & Core Emotion. Define the single, specific feeling you want this song to evoke. Write a one-paragraph description of this feeling. No music or lyrics yet.
- 2Lyric Mining with AI. Using a tool from the 'AI for Musicians' guide, generate thematic word clouds and metaphors around your core emotion. Synthesize these ideas into a page of potential lyrical fragments.
- 3Melodic Sketching. Write three distinct melodic options for the chorus. Record them as simple voice memos. Let them sit overnight.
- 4Structure & Tension. Map out the song's structure (verse, chorus, etc.). Define how the arrangement will build, hold, and release tension to serve the emotional arc.
- 5The Emotional Resonance Test. Record a simple demo. Play it for one trusted peer and ask only this: 'What did this song make you feel?' Compare their answer to your Day 1 intention.
- 6Intentional Refinement. Based on your peer feedback and your own critique, make one significant refinement to the lyrics, melody, or structure.
- 7Catalog & Archive. Finalize the refined demo. Archive the audio file along with your notes, split sheet, and lyrical document. This is one brick in your three-year cathedral.
