The 5-Day Rights Audit

Organize your most valuable assets—your copyrights—for long-term growth in five focused steps.

This challenge is a foundational exercise in getting your business house in order. In five days, you will create a master list of your works, verify their registration, and enrich their metadata for future opportunities.

The plan, day by day

  1. 1The Master Catalog. Create a definitive spreadsheet of every song you have written or co-written. Include columns for title, co-writers, and date of creation.
  2. 2The PRO Check-Up. Log into your Performing Rights Organization (e.g., ASCAP, BMI, SESAC). Cross-reference your master catalog and ensure every single work is registered correctly.
  3. 3AI-Powered Metadata. Following the 'AI for Musicians' guide, use an AI tool to generate descriptive metadata for three of your top songs. Include tags for mood, instrumentation, and potential use cases (e.g., 'uplifting corporate,' 'pensive indie film').
  4. 4The Split Sheet Stress Test. Locate the split sheet for one of your co-written songs. If you cannot find a signed copy in under five minutes, create a new one using a digital template and send it for signatures.
  5. 5Emotional Tagging for Sync. Review your master catalog. Add a new column: 'Core Emotional Resonance.' For your top 10 songs, define the primary feeling each evokes (e.g., 'defiant optimism,' 'wistful nostalgia'). This is your internal guide for sync pitches.
