The Copyright Clarity Audit

Audit your rights and define your ideal terms.

In this five-day audit, you will secure the rights for one of your songs, research key deal structures, and draft a 'deal memo' outlining your non-negotiable terms for any future publishing partnership.

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Create a definitive split sheet for one of your completed songs. List all co-writers, their PRO/IPI numbers, and their agreed-upon ownership percentages. Get it signed digitally by all parties.
  2. Day 2Research publishing administration deals versus co-publishing deals. Write down three key advantages and disadvantages of each structure from the perspective of an independent artist.
  3. Day 3 (AI Step)Find a standard music publishing agreement template online. Use an AI assistant (as covered in academy_ai_for_musicians) to summarize the 'Term' and 'Reversion Clause' sections. Ask it to explain the implications in simple language.
  4. Day 4Draft a one-page 'Ideal Deal Memo' for your song. Specify your non-negotiable terms, including term length (e.g., 3 years), territory (e.g., Worldwide ex-home territory), and your desired reversion clause.
  5. Day 5 (Emotional Resonance Step)Write a paragraph arguing for your song’s sync licensing potential. Describe three specific types of scenes in a film or TV show where your song's unique emotional core would be a perfect, high-value placement.
