The Collaborative Split Sheet Sprint

Create a new song kernel and formalize its ownership in five days.

This challenge walks you through the foundational steps of music publishing: creating a new musical idea with a collaborator and properly documenting the ownership from day one.

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1: Ideate with AIUse an AI prompt generator (like ChatGPT or Gemini) to create three unique song concepts based on a single emotion (e.g., 'cautious optimism'). Select the most compelling concept.
  2. Day 2: Collaborative SketchFind a trusted collaborator. Spend one hour working on a verse and chorus for the chosen concept. Record a simple voice memo of your work.
  3. Day 3: The Split ConversationHave a direct conversation with your collaborator about songwriting splits. Agree on the percentages. Draft a simple email documenting the song title, date, collaborators, and agreed-upon shares.
  4. Day 4: Emotional Resonance Gut-CheckPlay the voice memo for a third party who was not involved. Ask them one question: 'What specific feeling does this give you?' Note if their answer aligns with your original intent.
  5. Day 5: Catalog EntryCreate a simple spreadsheet for your song catalog. Add this new song as the first entry, including its title, writers, splits, and the date of creation. This is the start of your publishing database.
