The Release Format Financial Forecast

Map the publishing and royalty implications of your next project. Compare a single vs. an EP to make a smarter business decision.

In this 5-day challenge, you will move from artist to executive. You will create a clear financial and administrative forecast for a hypothetical project, comparing the workload and potential of releasing a single versus a 3-song EP. This is essential planning for any serious musician.

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Select your project concept. This can be one real song you are working on, or a group of three related song ideas.
  2. Day 2Create a simple spreadsheet for a 3-song EP. List each song, all co-writers, and their agreed-upon publishing splits. This is your master ownership document.
  3. Day 3Use an AI chatbot to generate a template for a 'split sheet' agreement. Reference the 'Publishing Simplified' guide to ensure it includes all necessary clauses, then customize it for your project.
  4. Day 4Research the current statutory mechanical royalty rate for physical/download sales in your primary territory. Calculate the potential mechanical royalties for 1,000 sales of your 3-song EP vs. 1,000 sales of a single track.
  5. Day 5Pressure-test emotional resonance for sync. For each of the three songs, write a one-sentence 'sync pitch' describing its core emotion and ideal use case (e.g., 'Brooding, minimalist track for a tense detective scene.'). This builds your professional sync catalog.
