The 5-Day Hook Factory
Engineer an unforgettable hook in five days.
This challenge deconstructs hook writing into a systematic, five-day process. You will move from foundational analysis to the creation of a complete, polished hook by focusing sequentially on rhythm, melody, and lyrics. This is a technical exercise in commercial songwriting.
The plan, day by day
- Day 1Rhythmic Foundation. Select a tempo between 90-120 BPM. Create three distinct two-bar rhythmic motifs using only a percussive sample or a hand clap. Focus on syncopation and repetition. Select the strongest one.
- Day 2Melodic Contour. Using your chosen rhythmic motif, write a simple, stepwise melody to fit it. Use a neutral syllable or a simple synth patch. The melody must serve the rhythm. Create one ascending and one descending version.
- Day 3Lyrical Core. Brainstorm ten phrases of two to five words that could serve as a song's central idea. Prioritize clarity and sonic texture. Select the phrase with the most emotional and commercial potential.
- Day 4Synthesis. Marry your lyric from Day 3 to your strongest melody-rhythm combination from Day 2. Adjust melodic notes to fit the natural cadence of the words. Record a voice memo of the integrated hook.
- Day 5Performance and Polish. Re-record the hook with intentional performance. Produce two distinct takes: one with a breathy, intimate delivery and one with a declarative, powerful tone. Analyze which approach best serves the hook.
