Challenge: The Royalty Projection
Make your streaming numbers tangible by estimating their financial value.
This exercise is designed to connect the abstract concept of streaming numbers to the concrete reality of royalty income. By projecting the potential earnings of a single song, you will understand exactly what is at stake with proper registration.
The plan, day by day
- 1Choose one of your songs on Spotify. Go to your Spotify for Artists dashboard and find its all-time stream count.
- 2Research the current, approximate blended royalty rate per stream (e.g., $0.003). Multiply your total streams by this rate to calculate a rough gross revenue estimate.
- 3Understand the two main royalties from a stream: performance and mechanical. For this exercise, assume a 50/50 split of the gross revenue between these two royalty types.
- 4Reference your split sheet for this song. Calculate your personal share of the estimated writer/publisher revenue. This is your projected take-home before any administrative fees.
- 5Write a single paragraph reflecting on this number. Articulate why failing to register this song with a PRO and publishing administrator means forfeiting this specific amount of money.
