Challenge: Reverse-Engineer a Hit

Deconstruct a current hit to understand its power.

This 3-day challenge guides you through analyzing the structure, emotional arc, and melodic components of a Top-40 streaming hit to inform your own songwriting.

The plan, day by day

1. Day 1Select a song from the current Top-40 streaming chart. Use an AI transcription tool or a large language model (as taught in 'AI for Musicians') to map its complete structure with timestamps: Verse 1, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Verse 2, etc.
2. Day 2With your structural map, identify the song's primary emotional turning point. Rewrite the lyrics for that single section (e.g., the chorus) to convey the opposite emotion. Does the structure still support this new feeling? This tests the core of its Emotional Resonance.
3. Day 3Write a new 8-bar pre-chorus and 8-bar chorus using the chord progression of the song you analyzed, but with your own original melody and lyrics. Focus on creating a powerful sense of tension and release between the two sections.
