This 5-day challenge walks you through the essential first steps of setting up your music publishing. You will create key documents and research the organizations you need to join to ensure you get paid for your work.

The plan, day by day

1. Day 1Research the Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) in your country (e.g., ASCAP, BMI, SESAC in the US). Select one and begin the registration process. Document the yearly fee and member benefits.
2. 2Create a standardized split sheet template for your studio. Include fields for name, contact info, role (e.g., lyricist, producer), PRO affiliation/IPI number, and ownership percentage. Save it as your go-to template.
3. 3Use an AI assistant to explain the difference between a publishing administrator (like Songtrust or TuneCore Publishing) and a traditional publishing deal. Write a one-paragraph summary of which is right for you at this stage.
4. 4Pressure-test a song's sync potential. Select one of your finished songs and write a one-paragraph pitch for it to a music supervisor. Explicitly state the scene type and emotion it would enhance, proving its resonance.
5. 5Conduct a catalog audit. Create a spreadsheet of all your finished songs. Add columns for 'Composition % Owned,' 'Master % Owned,' 'Registered with PRO,' and 'Collaborators.' Identify any administrative gaps.
