The 7-Day Publishing Setup

Organize Your Compositions. Secure Your Royalties.

This one-week challenge guides you through the essential, non-negotiable steps of setting up your music publishing administration. From cataloging your work to affiliating with a PRO, you will build the foundation for collecting every dollar you are owed.

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Compile a master spreadsheet of all your completed compositions. List the title, all co-writers, and their contact information.
  2. Day 2Create a split sheet template. Contact your co-writers from Day 1 to retroactively complete and sign a split sheet for your top three collaborations.
  3. Day 3Research the major Performing Rights Organizations in your territory. Choose one and begin your application as a songwriter.
  4. Day 4Read your chosen PRO's documentation on the writer's share versus the publisher's share. Create a vanity publishing entity name to collect your publisher's share.
  5. Day 5Identify and compare three publishing administration services. Analyze their fees, contract terms, and global collection network.
  6. Day 6Choose one unregistered song from your catalog. Register the composition directly with your PRO, documenting all relevant writer and publisher information.
  7. Day 7Systemize your process. Create a 'New Song Workflow' checklist that includes finalizing splits and registering the work with your PRO and chosen administrator.
