Transform one song from a rough draft to a masterwork.
This intensive one-week challenge guides you through the professional editing process for a single song. You will deconstruct, scrutinize, and rebuild your lyrics line by line, applying the core principles of elite songwriting craft.
The plan, day by day
- Day 1: The FoundationSelect one of your unfinished songs. Print the lyrics. Read them aloud twice. Identify the core emotional truth and write it in a single, clear sentence.
- Day 2: The Cliché HuntCircle every cliché, placeholder phrase, or overused metaphor in your lyric. Your objective is to replace at least three of them with fresh, specific imagery.
- Day 3: The Verb UpgradeHighlight every weak or passive verb (is, was, has, go, see). Replace them with strong, active verbs that add motion and specificity to your lines.
- Day 4: The Sensory AuditAnalyze your lyric for sensory details. Ensure you engage at least three of the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) with concrete descriptions.
- Day 5: The 'So What?' InterrogationRead each line individually and ask, 'So what?'. Does this line advance the story or deepen the emotional core? Delete or radically rewrite any line that fails this test.
- Day 6: The Rhyme ReviewExamine your rhymes. Do they feel forced? Do they serve the meaning? Experiment with replacing one perfect rhyme with a more compelling near rhyme or internal rhyme.
- Day 7: The Final PolishReassemble your edited lyric. Read it aloud, listening for rhythm and flow. Make final micro-adjustments for sonic quality and impact. You now have a professionally refined lyric.
