The 7-Day Hit Structure Sprint

Analyze a hit. Internalize its blueprint. Write your next demo.

This one-week challenge guides you through reverse-engineering the structure of a current hit song and using that framework to build a new original piece. It is a practical exercise in applying market-proven architecture to your own creative instincts.

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Select one song from the current Top 40. Map its structure precisely: intro, verse 1, pre-chorus, chorus, verse 2, etc. Note the timestamp for each section change.
  2. Day 2Using a tool from the AI for Musicians guide, ask it to analyze the lyrical themes and chord progression of your chosen song's chorus. Note its findings.
  3. Day 3Write a new chorus for an original song idea, keeping the same length and melodic contour as your reference track's chorus.
  4. Day 4Build out the verse and pre-chorus sections for your new song, following the structural map you created on Day 1.
  5. Day 5Pressure-test the chorus you wrote. Does it deliver a clear emotional payoff? Rewrite one line to heighten its emotional resonance, referencing the Emotional Resonance guide.
  6. Day 6Write the bridge and outro. The bridge must introduce a new perspective or musical idea.
  7. Day 7Record a simple voice memo or acoustic demo of your newly structured song. Compare its flow to the original reference track.
